In the past, transportation was the main factor to restrict the development of Lamma. Until 1960s, with the complement of the piers at Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan as well as the increasing of ferry service, Lamma has attracted more and more people from local and abroad to visit and settle down. Thus Lamma has become an island mixing the Chinese and Western cultures. At present, there are 2 ferry routes linking Lamma with Hong Kong Island i.e. Central <-> Yung Shue Wan; Central <-> Sok Kwu Wan. Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry Ltd. is the sole ferry company to manage the operation.
